Psilocybin and Sleep: What the Research Shows

Magic Mushroom Potency: Why It Varies and How Storage Affects It

Why magic mushroom potency varies so much between species, harvests and even caps and stems, and what research shows about how storage affects psilocybin.

Two batches of magic mushrooms can look almost the same and still have very different effects. That is because magic mushroom potency varies far more than most people expect. This guide explains why psilocybin levels differ between species, harvests and even parts of the same mushroom, and what research shows about how storage affects potency over time.

This article is for general information only. It does not encourage drug use, and psilocybin is illegal in many countries. It is not a guide to identifying wild mushrooms.

What Makes Magic Mushrooms Potent?

Magic mushrooms contain several related compounds. The most important is psilocybin, which the body turns into psilocin, the substance that causes the effects. Mushrooms also contain some psilocin directly, along with smaller amounts of related compounds such as baeocystin. Together, the levels of these compounds determine how strong a mushroom is.

Because these levels vary naturally, weight alone says little about strength. One gram from one batch can be much stronger than one gram from another.

Species and Strains

Different species contain different amounts of psilocybin, so magic mushroom potency starts with the species. For example, the liberty cap, a wild species found across Europe, is often described as relatively potent for its small size. Our article on the liberty cap mushroom explains more. Within Psilocybe cubensis, people also describe many strains, such as Golden Teacher or Penis Envy. However, scientific comparisons between strains are limited, and differences in growing conditions can matter as much as genetics. Read our guide to the best-known magic mushroom strains for an overview.

Harvest, Batch and Growing Conditions

A classic study from 1982 measured psilocybin in Psilocybe cubensis grown under controlled conditions [1]. Psilocybin levels showed no clear upward or downward trend across harvests, but they varied by a factor of four. Moreover, mushroom samples from outside sources varied by more than ten times from one collection to the next.

In other words, even under the same conditions, potency can change a lot between batches. This is one reason why careful dosing matters so much. Our magic mushroom dosage guide explains why starting low is the safest approach.

Caps, Stems and Spores

A 2020 study from the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague looked at different parts of Psilocybe cubensis [2]. The caps contained about twice as much of these compounds as the stems on average, although individual mushrooms varied so much that the difference was not statistically significant. The researchers found no psilocybin or related compounds in the spores at all.

Because caps and stems differ, mixing a whole batch into a powder can make magic mushroom potency more even. This is also why makers of mushroom edibles aim to blend the mushroom evenly. Read our article on mushroom chocolate to learn more.

How Storage Affects Magic Mushroom Potency

Psilocybin is not completely stable, so magic mushroom potency can drop over time. The Prague study also tested different storage and processing conditions [2]. Surprisingly, the greatest loss happened in fresh mushrooms stored frozen at -80°C. By contrast, the smallest loss happened in dried mushrooms kept in the dark at room temperature.

Based on this research and general chemistry, these practices help preserve psilocybin:

  • Dry them thoroughly: dried mushrooms kept their potency best in the study.
  • Keep them dark: light can speed up the breakdown of psilocin.
  • Keep them dry: use an airtight container to keep out moisture and prevent mold.
  • Avoid heat: store them away from radiators, sunlight and warm rooms.

Most importantly, always store any psychoactive substance safely away from children and pets.

Signs Mushrooms Have Lost Potency

Psilocin can break down into blue-colored compounds, which is why magic mushrooms often bruise blue when handled. However, color is not a reliable way to measure strength. Mushrooms that smell musty, feel damp or show signs of mold should be thrown away, since mold can cause illness regardless of potency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do magic mushrooms lose potency over time?

Yes, gradually. Dried mushrooms stored in a dark, dry place appear to keep their potency best.

Are magic mushroom caps stronger than stems?

On average, caps contain more psilocybin than stems, but individual mushrooms vary a lot.

Is freezing a good way to store magic mushrooms?

Not for fresh mushrooms. In one study, fresh mushrooms frozen at very low temperatures lost the most psilocybin of all storage methods tested.

Conclusion: Magic Mushroom Potency Is Never Fixed

Magic mushroom potency depends on species, growing conditions, the harvest, the part of the mushroom and how it is stored. Because of this, the same amount can have very different effects. Accurate information, careful dosing and good storage reduce the risks. To learn more about how psilocybin affects the mind and body, read our guide to psilocybin effects.
