Finding the right magic mushroom dosage is the single most important step toward a safe, positive experience. Too little and nothing happens; too much and a journey can become overwhelming. This guide includes a psilocybin dose chart for dried Psilocybe cubensis powder and explains how strain potency changes the numbers, how to dose our chocolate bars, and the safety rules every user should follow. For the history behind the pairing, read our article on mushroom chocolate.
Why Magic Mushroom Dosage Varies
Psilocybin content differs from mushroom to mushroom, and even more between strains. Your body weight, mood, recent meals and tolerance also play a role. That is why experienced users talk about dose ranges rather than exact amounts. Powder helps here: because the whole harvest is ground and mixed, every gram is far more consistent than a whole dried mushroom.
Typical Dose Ranges for Dried Psilocybe Cubensis
The ranges below apply to dried Psilocybe cubensis of average potency, such as Golden Teacher or Mexican cubensis:
- Microdose: 0.1–0.3 g – no noticeable trip; some people report a lift in mood or focus. Read our guide to microdosing magic mushrooms.
- Small dose: 0.5–1 g – mild effects, brighter colors, a relaxed and talkative mood.
- Normal dose: 1–2 g – a clear psychedelic experience with visuals and emotional depth.
- Strong dose: 2.5–3.5 g – intense, introspective journeys for experienced users only.
- Very high dose: 5 g and above – overwhelming for most people and not recommended without extensive experience and a sober trip sitter.
Psilocybin Dose Chart
This psilocybin dose chart summarizes the same ranges for dried cubensis of average potency. Each piece of our chocolate bars holds about 0.33 g of mushrooms.
| Dose level | Dried cubensis | Chocolate pieces | Typical effects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microdose | 0.1–0.3 g | 1/3 to 1 piece | No trip; subtle changes at most |
| Small dose | 0.5–1 g | 1–2 pieces | Mild effects, relaxed mood |
| Normal dose | 1–2 g | 3–5 pieces | Clear psychedelic experience |
| Strong dose | 2.5–3.5 g | Experienced users only | Intense, introspective journey |
| Very high dose | 5 g and above | Not recommended | Overwhelming for most people |
Fresh Mushrooms, Dried Mushrooms and Magic Truffles
All the numbers above refer to dried mushrooms. Fresh mushrooms are mostly water, so they weigh roughly ten times as much as the same mushrooms once dried. As a result, 10 g of fresh mushrooms is roughly equal to 1 g dried. Always check which form a dosage table is talking about before you rely on it.
Magic truffles, which are sold legally in Dutch smartshops, are another common source of confusion for European readers. Truffles are usually sold fresh and are less potent per gram than dried mushrooms. Therefore, packs typically contain around 10 to 22 grams, and truffle dosage charts use much larger numbers than mushroom charts. Never apply a truffle dose to dried mushroom powder, because the result would be far too strong.
Adjusting Your Dose for Strain Potency
Some strains are considerably stronger than average. Albino and Penis Envy genetics in particular can be one and a half to two times as potent as a classic cubensis. If you switch to Albino Penis Envy or Jack Frost, reduce your usual magic mushroom dosage by roughly a third to a half the first time. True Albino Teacher and DC Mak sit between the two.
How to Dose Magic Mushroom Chocolate Bars
Our magic mushroom chocolate bars contain 5 grams of mushrooms divided into 15 pieces, so each piece holds about 0.33 g. That makes dosing simple: one to two pieces is a small dose, three to five pieces a normal dose. Chocolate can take a little longer to kick in, so wait at least 90 minutes before you consider taking more.
Measuring Magic Mushroom Powder Accurately
For anything below one gram, use a digital scale that measures to 0.01 g. Kitchen scales are not precise enough for microdoses. Many people stir their powder into tea or lemon juice, or fill empty capsules so every dose is identical.
How Long Does a Magic Mushroom Dose Last?
Effects usually begin 30 to 60 minutes after you take a dose, although an empty stomach can make them start sooner. The experience generally peaks after two to three hours and fades over four to six hours in total. Afterward, many people feel tired or reflective for the rest of the day. Plan for the whole day, and keep the following morning free after a strong dose.
Tolerance: Spacing Out Your Doses
Tolerance to psilocybin builds very quickly. If you take the same magic mushroom dosage two days in a row, the second dose will feel noticeably weaker. Tolerance usually fades within one to two weeks, so most people leave at least a week between full doses. Moreover, taking a much larger amount to overcome tolerance is unpredictable and not recommended. Psilocybin also shares tolerance with LSD, so the same waiting time applies after using either substance.
Magic Mushroom Dosage Safety Rules
- Start low and go slow. You can always take more next time, but you cannot take less. A dose that is too high is one of the main causes of a bad trip.
- Wait at least 90 minutes before redosing; effects usually begin after 30–60 minutes.
- Choose a safe, comfortable setting and, for higher doses, have a sober friend present. Our guide to set and setting explains how to prepare.
- Never drive or operate machinery until the next day.
- Do not combine psilocybin with alcohol, cannabis or other substances. Read why in our guide to psilocybin and cannabis.
- Avoid psilocybin if you take lithium, MAOIs or tramadol, and talk to a doctor if you take antidepressants or have a heart condition.
- Do not use psilocybin if you or close family members have a history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Check the law where you live first. Our overview of psilocybin legality in Europe and around the world explains how the rules differ between countries.
Finding Your Own Magic Mushroom Dosage
Everyone responds differently, so treat the dose chart above as a starting point rather than a rule. Begin at the lower end of a range, keep notes about how each dose felt, and adjust slowly over time. Research groups such as the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London and the Johns Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research also continue to study how people respond to psilocybin. If you are unsure which strain suits you, our full range of Psilocybe cubensis powder lists the potency of every strain, and each product page includes its own dosage guide.
Magic Mushroom Dosage FAQ
How many grams should I take the first time?
For a first experience, most harm reduction guides suggest a small dose of about 0.5 to 1 g of dried cubensis. This lets you learn how your body responds before you consider anything stronger.
Does body weight change the dose?
Body weight matters less than many people expect. Strain potency, tolerance and your state of mind usually have a much bigger effect than weight.
What dose is used in clinical trials?
Many psilocybin trials in Europe and North America use a single dose of around 25 mg of pure psilocybin, given with psychological support. That is roughly comparable to a strong dose of dried mushrooms, but mushrooms vary too much for an exact conversion. Learn more in our guide to psilocybin therapy.
