Psilocybin vs LSD: Key Differences in Effects, Duration and Safety

Psilocybin vs LSD compared: their shared Swiss history, how they work in the brain, what a direct study in Basel found, duration, tolerance, risks and the law.

Psilocybin and LSD are the two best-known classic psychedelics, and both have deep roots in Switzerland. Yet they differ in origin, strength, duration and how they are studied today. This guide compares psilocybin vs LSD, using research from Basel and elsewhere, so you can understand how LSD and magic mushrooms really differ.

This article is for general information only. Both substances are illegal in most countries, so always follow the law where you live.

Psilocybin vs LSD: A Shared Swiss History

Both stories lead back to the Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann at Sandoz in Basel. Hofmann first made LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) in 1938 while studying compounds from ergot, a fungus that grows on grain. In 1943, he discovered its effects by accident. Fifteen years later, in 1958, he isolated psilocybin and psilocin from Mexican mushrooms. As a result, one scientist in one Swiss laboratory played a key role in both substances.

Natural vs Semi-Synthetic

The first big difference is where they come from. Psilocybin occurs naturally in more than 100 species of magic mushrooms. In contrast, LSD does not occur in nature. Chemists make it from lysergic acid, a compound related to substances found in ergot. For this reason, LSD is described as semi-synthetic.

To learn more about the natural compound, read our guide to psilocybin effects and how psilocybin works.

How They Work in the Brain

Both substances act mainly on serotonin 5-HT2A receptors in the brain. For psilocybin, the strength of the experience closely tracks how many of these receptors are occupied [1]. This shared mechanism explains why their effects feel similar. However, LSD also acts on several other receptor types, including some dopamine receptors. In addition, structural research suggests that part of the serotonin receptor closes over LSD like a lid, keeping it bound for a long time. This may help explain its long duration [2]. Our guide to psilocybin and the brain explains what happens in more detail.

Psilocybin vs LSD: What a Direct Comparison Found

For many years, people compared the two substances mainly through personal reports. In 2022, however, researchers at University Hospital Basel published a direct comparison in healthy volunteers [3]. In this double-blind study, 28 participants each received placebo, two doses of LSD and two doses of psilocybin on separate days.

The results were clear. Both doses of LSD and the higher dose of psilocybin produced very similar subjective effects. The lower dose of psilocybin was clearly weaker. Most importantly, LSD's effects lasted much longer than those of psilocybin. There were also small physical differences: psilocybin raised blood pressure more, while LSD raised heart rate more.

Duration and Dose: Magic Mushrooms vs LSD

Duration is the difference most people notice. A psilocybin experience usually lasts about four to six hours. An LSD experience, by contrast, often lasts eight to twelve hours or more. As a result, LSD needs a much longer, clearer block of time, and the comedown can stretch late into the night.

The doses also look very different. LSD is active in millionths of a gram (micrograms), while psilocybin is measured in milligrams. Because mushrooms vary in strength, the amount of psilocybin in a given weight of dried mushrooms is never exact. Our magic mushroom dosage guide explains how mushroom doses compare.

How the Experiences Compare

Many people describe magic mushrooms as more "earthy," emotional and body-focused, while LSD is often described as more energetic, clear-headed and mentally stimulating. However, these descriptions come from personal reports, not controlled research. The Basel study suggests that, at comparable doses, the main subjective effects are actually very similar. Expectations, mindset and setting probably shape these perceived differences as much as the substances themselves.

Tolerance and Cross-Tolerance

Both substances cause tolerance very quickly. After one dose, the effects of a second dose a day later are much weaker. Moreover, the two substances share tolerance. Studies from the early 1960s already showed that tolerance to LSD also reduced the effects of psilocybin, and the reverse [4]. This cross-tolerance supports the idea that they act through the same main receptor. Our guide to psilocybin tolerance explains how long it lasts.

Risks and Safety

Both psilocybin and LSD have low physical toxicity, and neither is considered physically addictive. Nevertheless, both can cause intense anxiety, confusion and risky behavior, especially at high doses or in an unsafe setting. In addition, both pose higher risks for people with a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder. Combining either substance with lithium has been linked to seizures. Because LSD lasts longer, a difficult experience can also last longer. Read our guide to set and setting for practical safety advice.

Legal Status in Europe and Beyond

Both psilocybin and LSD are listed in Schedule I of the 1971 UN Convention on Psychotropic Substances. Consequently, both are illegal in most European countries. Rules on mushrooms and magic truffles, however, differ from country to country. For details, see our guide to psilocybin legality in Europe and around the world.

Psilocybin vs LSD FAQ

Which is stronger, psilocybin or LSD?

Neither is simply "stronger." At comparable doses, the Basel study found very similar effects. The main difference is that LSD lasts much longer.

Which is used more in research?

Psilocybin is currently used in more clinical trials, partly because its shorter duration makes sessions easier to manage. However, LSD research is also growing, especially in Switzerland.

Can you build tolerance to both at once?

Yes. Because of cross-tolerance, taking one reduces the effects of the other for several days.

Conclusion: Psilocybin vs LSD at a Glance

When comparing psilocybin vs LSD, the similarities are greater than many people think. Both act on the same main serotonin receptor, both trace back to a Swiss laboratory, and at comparable doses they produce very similar effects. The biggest differences are their origin, their dose and, above all, their duration. Whatever your interest, rely on research rather than myths, and always follow the law where you live.
